Secretary's Proposed Supplemental Priorities and Definitions for Discretionary Grant Programs - Comment Period Ends

On October 12, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) released the Secretary's proposed priorities for competitive grant programs and launched a 30-day public comment period. Once the Department considers the comments received and issues the Secretary’s final priorities, the Secretary may choose to use one or more of them in competitions for new discretionary grant awards this year and in future years. These priorities align with the vision set forth by the Secretary in support of high-quality educational opportunities for students of all ages.

The proposed priorities are:

  • Empowering Families to Choose a High-Quality Education that Meets Their Child’s Unique Needs
  • Promoting Innovation and Efficiency, Streamlining Education with an Increased Focus on Improving Student Outcomes, and Providing Increased Value to Students and Taxpayers
  • Fostering Flexible and Affordable Paths to Obtaining Knowledge and Skills
  • Fostering Knowledge and Promoting the Development of Skills that Prepare Students to be Informed, Thoughtful, and Productive Individuals and Citizens
  • Meeting the Unique Needs of Students And Children, including those with Disabilities and/or with Unique Gifts and Talents
  • Promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Education, With a Particular Focus on Computer Science
  • Promoting Literacy
  • Promoting Effective Instruction in Classrooms and Schools
  • Promoting Economic Opportunity
  • Encouraging Improved School Climate and Safer and More Respectful Interactions in a Positive and Safe Educational Environment
  • Ensuring that Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families Have Access to High-Quality Educational Choices

New CTE State Directors' Orientation

Registration is now open for the New CTE State Directors’ Orientation. This virtual training via webcast will provide an overview of DATE’s annual activities and requirements, including the Perkins grant award cycle, State Plan Review and Submission Process, and the Consolidated Annual Report (CAR) process. It will also address Perkins IV non-regulatory guidance, Uniform Guidance, Monitoring, Impact of Single Audits and a Perkins Reauthorization Update.

2017 CTE Technical Assistance Initiative: Resources and Supports

2017 Data Quality Institute

Cross-state Collaboration to Improve CTE Performance Accountability

Registration is now open! The annual Data Quality Institute (DQI), hosted by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE), Division of Academic and Technical Education, will be held on November 16-17, 2017, at the Conference Center at the Maritime Institute in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.

The DQI is designed to help states leverage data to assess and share information on career and technical education (CTE) student and program outcomes. Federal expectations for state reporting on CTE student and program performance are anticipated to be modified and extended with the imminent reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV). Accordingly, the theme of the 2017 DQI—Cross-state Collaboration to Improve CTE Performance Accountability—will be on sharing promising practices to support states in refining their CTE data systems.

State Plan Training Session #2
